European Institute of Oriental Medicine (EIOM)
Volker Scheid was one of the founders of The European Institute of Oriental Medicine (EIOM) established in 2001. The Institute sees itself as a centre of excellence in education and research in traditional East Asian or Oriental Medicine. The aim of the Institute is to provide education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels that match the highest international standards and to contribute to international research within the field.
At EIOM Volker Scheid teaches a two year course in Chinese herbal medicine. The course provides a solid foundation in the use of classical and modern herbal formulas and treatment strategies for students with a background in TCM acupuncture. It differs from similar courses offered in the West by its emphasis on strategic thinking as key to effective clinical practice. An understanding of formulas and strategies is developed by following their historical usage. Vice versa, the treatment strategies embodied by the formulas taught are used as tools to deepen students’ understanding of physiology and pathology in Chinese medicine.
"This course enriches the practice of anyone studying Chinese medicine. Volker Scheid's clarity of teaching and his profound knowledge of Chinese herbal medicine developed from a deep understanding of its history motivate students to tackle even difficult cases. His ability to convey the structure and composition of formulas will help even experienced practitioners to improve their clinical skills."
Bob Fisher, Düsseldorf
"An exceptional teacher is able to transmit knowlege by pointing out relationships, relate facts to their context, because it is only in this way that they acquire meaning. I am grateful to have found such a teacher in Volker Scheid. He was able to soften what had become rigid in our minds and, by creating a small amount of creative chaos, to lead us on to a new level of understanding of what Chinese medicine is."
Anrea Mack, Stuttgart
"I went to China on several occasions but it is only through this course that I have begun to develop an understanding of what Chinese medicine might be.”
Dr. Carola von Hohenlohe, Vienna
