East Asian Medicine - EASTmedicine

"Promote the flourishing of tradition by infusing it with new knowledge."

Zhang Cigong 章次公20th century Chinese physician

I am the director responsible for strategic development of EASTmedicine (East Asian Sciences and Traditions in Medicine), a new interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching and clinical practice at the University of Westminster

EASTmedicine combines the provision of professional education in Chinese medicine with innovative research across a number of disciplines. Specific research projects include the examination of medical currents in Chinese medicine, the translation of East Asian medical texts and clinical research aimed at finding effective solutions for the treatment of long-term conditions and illnesses that respond poorly to drug treatments. The basis of all EASTmedicine's projects is an in-depth understanding of the epidemiological, cultural, and social influences that have shaped the development of medical practice over time. We also draw on a variety of perspectives from across the natural and social sciences to critically examine the issues involved in integrating East Asian medical traditions into modern western health care systems. This implies safeguarding and maintaining what is valuable about East Asian medical traditions as well as developing them further to meet the challenges of the future.
